Are you thinking that your marriage is headed for a rocky road and the smell of divorce is in the air? Then it may be time to turn to a marriage guidance counselor. A lot of them deal specifically with this case at hand and may be valuable towards finding a solution but you should get a good one. Here are some things you should consider when choosing a marriage guidance counselor:
1. Ask what are the counselor's references.
There are 3 types of counselors:
Type "A" – Has a PhD or a PsyD. They have around five years at graduate school and have 3,000 hours of therapy behind them while being supervised by a veteran psychologist. One needs to have a doctoral degree to be approved legally as a ‘clinical psychologist'. A counselor that holds a PhD is often more academic and will frequently do forensic and scholarly work aside from therapy.
Type "B" – Has an M.S.W which means Master of Social Work. Social workers are able to work in one on one scenarios or in organizations and are capable of applying social theory to various situations.
Type "C" – Typically holds an M.A. or M.S. in counseling. They are usually referred to as Marriage and Family Counselors. This type of counselor is able to work only with a few number of people in counseling situations or with individuals. They will need to have two years of study and hold a degree and also need at least 1500 hours of counceling while supervised.
Family and Marriage counselors, M.A. or M.S., and M.S.W. (Social Workers) are less expensive options for counceling and if you are declaring marriage counseling from the insurance company, then they will probably send you to one of them.
2. After you have determined what type of counselor you need, you must then see what they are charging. Family and Marriage counselors are usually the cheaper route to go and Clinical Psychologists charge the most. If saving your marriage is really important to you then the cheaper route might not be the right one to take. When reviewing the charges, don’t just look at the cost for each meeting but also how long the treatment is expected to be since this can play a major role in the total cost of the services.
3. Then you will need to review the counselor's policies for the following:
* What is the cost if I miss a meeting?
* If I am on vacation will I still be charged for that weeks meeting?
* Will the counselor take calls at their home or only during office hours? Will they take calls outside of your regular meeting schedule?
* Is there someone else to speak with in case of an emergency?
A descent Marriage and Family counselor will have one objective to reach – to help "SaveMyMarriageToday". If you are meeting with a counselor but don’t feel that they are devoted to assisting you in saving your marriage then you should look for another option. You can find a lot of excellent counselors or therapists that can help "SaveMyMarriageToday" from a divorce so don’t go for the divorce prior to giving counceling a good try.
